We moved to a home with hills, sea and farm land four years ago and we love our space, the people and the life. However, we landed here just in time to be locked in for two years as if we needed to worry about social distance. When you name your neighbours [they are cows] and you can recognise them by name and on sight, you have too much social distance. So, for two years and two more after, we built a small Lego village with detail that suggested an unhealthy lack of life. We also promised ourselves a large holiday that would make up for it.
While the high-level plan had focus but the specifics wandered. We started with US mountains. Then we decided Swiss mountains were just as nice and much closer. Six months of Egyptian research [that’s a different story] created the idea for a Nile cruise with balloon rides over pharaohs’ tombs and days touring Cairo. Six months of research also absolutely filled our need for Egyptian culture. We couldn't stand the thought of visiting. We have finally, as Jane says, 'plumped'. See the details to the right and wish us luck.
After much deliberation, we intend to tour the Far East or at least parts of it. We're going to spend roughly a month in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos; and we're touring mainly by train! Preparations are already underway and vaccinations ongoing.
We've planned days in Hanoi and sleeping on a junk in Halong Bay. We reach one hotel by taking a boat up the Mekong River and we'll lounge in a beach resort near Laos among other things. Jane and I will take turns with diary entries and post photos as we go.
Watch here for the updates.
